Featured Gardens: Lakewold Gardens and PowellsWood

These pages highlight gardens that are featured in my book, Walking Washington’s Gardens

Lakewold Gardens

Location: Lakewood, WA  www.lakewoldgardens.org

Lakewold Gardens is an estate garden that showcases the landscape design of Thomas Church. Rhododendrons grace the Circle Drive and Flag Lawn, and elements of both classical and informal design create diversity in this garden. Late spring and early summer are the best times to see the garden in full bloom.  The garden gift shop is housed in the original carriage house and plants are sold outside the gift shop during shop hours.

The garden is open Tuesday through Sunday, year-round, and there is an admission fee. Picnicking is permitted on the lawns. The first floor of the Wagner House is open during the garden’s hours of operation and special events. The garden holds annual events such as the Beautiful Tables Showcase and seasonal events, classes, and a youth program. Garden space can be rented for weddings.

 PowellsWood

Location: Federal Way, WA  www.powellswood.org

DSC02688PowellsWood is a 3-acre garden created on the edge of a 40-acre greenbelt. The garden was founded by Marty and Diane Powell of Federal Way. The garden features hydrangeas, rhododendrons, spring flowers, a wide variety of trees, and plants such as windmill palms, banana trees, and rosy crabapple kiwi that help create a tropical-inspired atmosphere throughout the garden. Features such as a brick walk and patio, stone birdbaths, a rose-covered pergola, a wooden arbor, a large recirculating pond, and a woodland overlook give visitors a variety of things to enjoy on their stroll through the garden. The well-designed garden rooms and displays demonstrate ways to use natural features to create beautiful landscapes. The garden holds an annual Storytelling Festival as well as a Mother’s Day Tea and plant sale, and an Earth Day Celebration. The Powells support nature education for youth and have a partnership with the Friends of the Eternal Rainforest in Monte Verde, Costa Rica (http://www.friendsoftheeternalrainforest.org).DSC02694modified
